Separate measures. Clear meanings.

The presentation follows the original NDS heritage website design documented October 3, 2026. Every source measurement is retained, with an explicit variable-by-variable crosswalk deciding its reader-facing section and approved label.

Heritage, ancestry, and Indigenous communities

The named people list joins detailed Hispanic-origin leaves (B03001), named reported ancestries (B04006), and named detailed Indigenous people leaves (B02020) for display. It sorts positive estimates by count, showing the full local list on one page below race and Hispanic origin. This is a presentation union, never a sum. Broad race labels, population totals, parent groups, “Other groups,” and unspecified/residual categories do not compete as heritages.

Race and ethnicity are population presentations

Race alone (B02001), Hispanic origin (B03003), and race alone or in combination (B02008–B02013) have independent views. Detailed Asian race identities (B02015) have their own view. White alone and White alone-or-in-combination are different measures; neither is a named heritage entry. This export does not include B03002’s mutually exclusive race/Hispanic-origin cross-classification, so that partition is not inferred.

Country of birth is context

B05006 is presented as plain country or territory names, in a separate country-of-birth view. Grouped regions such as the Americas and Latin America have a separate tab. They are not renamed into heritage identities and are not added to country counts.

Shares and rankings

Origin and ancestry shares use the original total-population denominator. B02020 Indigenous shares use its AIAN-alone population denominator. Birthplace shares use the foreign-born B05006 population. Source details identify the exact denominator. National lists compare the same variable across available ZIPs; they are source-count rankings from this export, not substituted certified publication ranks. Ties share a competition rank.

Complete source preservation

The original read-only export contains 12,049,769 records across 410 variables. The governed bridge maps 12,028,655 records to 33,703 directly matched operational ZIPs. All 39,487 operational ZIPs remain searchable. Source-only ZCTAs are not relabeled as postal ZIPs. Place labels come from the supplied ZIP spine; demographic estimates come from the original DuckDB sources.

Zero estimates and missing observations remain distinct. Sparse-source gaps are unavailable, not zero. Margins of error appear where the source supplied them. No overlapping counts are added, and B02020 people are not confused with B02021 groups tallied; B02021 was not supplied in this export.
